The Science Behind Effective Rodent Control: What Works and What Doesn’t

Not all rodent control methods are created equal. While DIY solutions may provide temporary relief, long-term results require a scientific, data-driven approach. Rodent Man Consulting uses proven strategies grounded in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to address the conditions behind an infestation, not just its symptoms.

Why “set a trap and wait” falls short

Snap traps, glue boards, and over-the-counter bait can knock down the rodents you can see. What they can't do is change the reasons the rodents arrived: available food, water, harborage, and easy access. Remove a dozen rats from a property whose dumpster area still feeds a hundred, and the population rebounds within weeks.

What a data-driven approach looks like

  • Inspection first — document the conditions and entry points driving activity.
  • Exclusion and sanitation — close the access points and cut off the food and water.
  • Monitoring — track activity over time so decisions follow evidence, not habit.
  • Targeted control — use proportionate measures only where the data calls for them.

This is the core of IPM: treat the system, measure the result, and reduce reliance on rodenticide — which protects non-target wildlife, pets, and people in the process.

The takeaway: durable results come from changing conditions, not from the body count in the first week.
